Emilie Gossiaux

Disability
Blind with no light perception. Profoundly hearing impaired with cochlear implant in the left ear and hearing aid in the right ear. Leg brace on left leg. Traumatic brain injury.

Statement
I collaborate and cooperate to construct shared experiences through an interdisciplinary art practice that combines drawing, painting, sculpture, installation, and performance. Having acquired blindness and hearing impairments, I use description and dialogue to intersubjectively (re)construct visual memories, fantasies, and dreams. For example, my memories of admiring Botticelli’s paintings and the sensation of riding a bicycle, my preteen fantasies about Leonardo DiCaprio from Titanic, or my nightmarish dreams of ants devouring broken fruits. My work asks each viewer to become a collaborator in constructing these experiences, which are simultaneously shared and intimate, ubiquitous and autobiographical, interpersonal and personal.
