Doug Hilson

Statement

I suffered a detached retina, and following surgeries on my eye, lost sight in my right eye, leaving me with no depth perception and my weak eye as my only sight. Because of hereditary macular degeneration, even my left eye has weak vision.

My earlier paintings were very complicated in terms of illusionistic depth and shapes. After a period of depression about my future as an artist, I decided to simplify my work by using flatter images, less complicated compositions and increased color intensity.

These choices led me to my most productive period in forty five years as an artist.
